What is DC Charging?

DC charging involves transferring electrical energy directly, providing a powerful energy transfer. This feature is why it is also known as fast charging. The process involves DC charging stations converting the electricity from the main grid into direct current.

Electric vehicles are generally categorized into charging stages: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. The initial stage, Level 1, corresponds to low-voltage AC charging. Level 2 corresponds to high-voltage AC charging. The final stage, Level 3, refers to DC charging. From this perspective, DC charging provides the fastest response in terms of charging an electric vehicle’s battery.

What is a DC Charging Station?

A DC charging station provides the capability for electric vehicles to use DC charging. These stations, offering services similar to DC charging, are also equipped with fast charging capabilities. Therefore, they are also referred to as fast charging stations. Generally, DC-type charging stations can charge a battery to about 80% in approximately 30-40 minutes. As of 2021, it is possible to access DC charging station services in every province in Turkey. Stations are available as fast and super-fast charging options for vehicle owners. In provinces with high population density, such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, the network of stations is more extensive compared to less populated provinces.

What is the Difference Between AC and DC Charging Stations?

Charging units for electric vehicles send currents of specific power. These currents are referred to as DC charging and AC charging. DC charging stands for direct current, while AC charging stands for alternating current. There are fundamental differences between the two. Generally, electric vehicle owners prefer DC charging. However, understanding the general structure of both types of charging stations can also be useful. The basic differences are as follows:

  1. Charging duration: AC charging stations often have a longer battery charging time. This type of current is more commonly used with home-type plugs.
  2. Charging speed: DC charging stations are more effective in charging the battery faster.
  3. Cost: Charging at DC stations can be more cost-effective.
  4. Design: AC stations tend to have a more compact design.
  5. Size: DC charging stations are generally larger in volume.
